Electrospun fiber-reinforced polymer composites
If you've ever seen a concrete slab being constructed, you would have noted steel rods called rebar laid inside the floor. Concrete has limited tensile strength despite being quite strong under compression. Rebar adds the missing tensile strength. A rebar-reinforced slab is an example of a composite material that is stronger than either of its components.

Increasingly, polymer composites are being used to build products that have a high strength-to-weight ratio. Carbon fiber reinforced polymers, for example, exhibit extreme strength and stiffness while weighing substantially less than materials of comparable strength. Recently, electrospun fibers are being used to fabricate strong and lightweight composite laminates.1 In particular, mats are made from electrospun nanofibers and used in composite laminates between plies to prevent delamination.2 These mats exhibit the ideal properties for joining layers of laminate for maximum strength and effective bonding. PVDF and PSF have been proven successful for use in the fabrication of electrospun nanofibrous mats used in manufacturing engineered composite laminate products.3 The resulting laminates are significantly tougher and tested with higher energy-release rates. Nylon 6/6 has also been used to produce nanofibers that are interleaved in fiber/epoxy matrix composite laminates.4 Significant improvements in fracture mechanics was observed. An array of additional studies have determined that electrospun nanofibers can be leveraged in the design of composite laminates to strengthen and stiffen materials while reducing weight and ameliorating the problem of delamination.

Naturally, the next level is to exploit coaxial electrospinning to further maximize the properties of nanofiber mats and composite materials. Researchers in the UK have used coaxial electrospinning to create pre-impregnated mats that also show higher tensile strength, higher porosity, and larger ratio surface area.5 Coaxial electrospun fibrous membranes have also been proven effective as separators in lithium-ion batteries.6

With the tremendous flexibility of the coaxial core/sheath fiber design, polymer material selections and other parameters can be further optimized to create nanofibers for novel and innovative applications beyond composite laminates.

If you're working on the development of composite materials or any other application that can benefit from coaxial or triaxial or even quadaxial electrospinning, please visit our website www.customspinnerets.com and if you don't see the type of spinneret you're looking for, don't hesitate to reach us. Chance are we can make it for you.

What's New

For a number of years, we have offered (3) inlet styles for our custom coaxial, triaxial, and quadaxial needles. Style A, the most popular choice, features a Luer inlet mounted perpendicular to the main needle. The length (DIM E) is adjustable but 25mm is the default size. Style B is the same as Style A but without the Luer fitting, just a stub which allows for a tubing connection. Style C includes the Luer inlet but it's mounted parallel to the inner flow inlet. What's new is Style D. This style features a short stub connected to chemical-resistant Tygon tubing. The tubing can be cut to any required length. We provide 2 feet with the needle but longer pieces are available. Then Style D also includes a Luer fitting that mounts to the other end of tubing for flexible mounting to any syringe arrangement as shown below.

We are constantly adding new products to our lineup. So, check our website often. If you have a request or suggestion, please reach out and let us know. We always appreciate customer feedback and all of our innovative products are customer-driven - including the amazingly versatile coaxial needle.
