Triaxial and Quadaxial Spinnerets |

You are likely familiar with core-sheath
electrospun nanofibers that are produced using ramé-hart coaxial
needles. We have sold thousands of coaxial needles over the past decade and

By adding another needle, it's possible to produce a triaxial needle which - among other things - can be used to produce a triaxial nanofiber made of three layers. And then, by adding yet another needle, it's possible to product a quadaxial needle which can produce nanofibers with four layers.1
Triaxial electrospinning has proven to greatly improve tensile strength and other properties of electrospun nonwoven mats, compared to similar mats made from core/sheath coaxial electrospun nanofibers.2 Researchers in Germany have proposed using triaxial nanofibers to produce perovskite-based solar cells. More developed methods using triaxial nanofibers could lead to nanofiber-based solar cells that could be flexible enough to be used in wearables and in other applications where nominal power is needed.3 Triaxial electrospinning has also been used for manufacturing composite dielectric elastomer fibers 4, blown PVP/PCL core/sheath fibers for drug release and cell growth 5, and myriad other novel applications.
Add a fourth needle and you have a quadaxial (or tetra-axial) spinneret. Quadaxial electrospinning has proven useful for producing nanofibers with controlled release drug delivery. Regenerating damaged tissue can be a challenging endeavor. There are a number of stages of the healing process where different drugs delivered over sustained periods at the proper time can greatly improve outcomes. Researchers in China have developed a method for producing quadaxial nanofibers that are loaded with multiple drugs which are positioned in the quadaxial nanofiber so they release in the proper sequence and for the ideal period of time.6 Both triaxial and quadaxial fiber production can be used to greatly enhance and optimize nanofiber production for specific applications that benefit from the greater strength and larger variety of materials not available in the traditional two-layer core/sheath nanofiber.
